PROLOGUE

It was not by chance that the wise and good dog Caribe, when she first arrived on the earth from her home in the stars, met before any other, that great and powerful dog of the earth, Marjon. On that very first night, which was marked by a special stillness lying heavy over the mountains, an adventure began that was to change many things. After it was over, all those who knew the true story would remember it for a very long time. I, the Grandfather, who saw it all begin and most of what happened afterwards, would remember it best.
Grandmother and the grandchildren, those who were old enough, would remember it too for they were a part of it all. But at that time Janey, the oldest, was only six and Betty had just turned three. They will not remember everything clearly. The boys were still babies. Tommy was barely a year old and Faron but a few months. Who can say what a babe will remember? That is why I must tell it all again and make this record so that none of the grandchildren will ever forget and all mankind, especially, the children, will know what really happened.
